The Saga of Fumi’s CJD Battle
October 2006
We asked our new primary care physician in Palo Alto if she could be enrolled in hospice but he thinks it is too soon. Luckily, her friend Debby, who is also a social worker visits us and does not agree with the doctor. Debby has a good friend who works for hospice and convinces her that Fumi is a candidate for hospice. Hospice sends a nurse who agrees with Debby, and Fumi is enrolled into hospice. Hospice supplies us with medical supplies since she has become incontinent. Soon she is unable to walk. A hospital bed and Hoyer lift enable us to give her wheelchair outings around the neighborhood. Hospice sends a caregiver who bathes her four times a week. By now it appears that she is seeing double. Hospice also sends volunteers who read to her and give her massages. She seems to really enjoy it.
