Cognitive Assessments for Non-English Speakers

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of our study is to understand how bilingualism influences the trajectory of healthy aging and neurodegenerative diseases. We also study how the linguistic features of certain languages can impact findings on cognitive tasks. The goal is to improve dementia care for people with diverse language backgrounds.

Study Details

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 45 years or older 
  • Healthy volunteer or history of cognitive impairment/dementia  
  • Proficient in English, Spanish and/or Tagalog

Exclusion Criteria

  • None

What to Expect

  • Testing: Testing includes neurological and physical examinations, cognitive testing, questionnaires and MRI brain imaging (optional)  
  • Frequency of Visits: The assessment requires about 8 hours, completed over the course of 2–3 days
  • Materials Needed: None
  • Costs: No costs will be charged for any of the study procedures. Parking will be validated for the 1625 Owens Street Garage or 1630 Third Street Garage at the UCSF Mission Bay campus for all study visits. You will receive monetary compensation for taking part in this study.
