Alexandra Nelson, MD, PhD

Asst Professor in Residence
Neurology

Dr. Nelson is the Richard and Shirley Cahill Endowed Chair in Parkinson's Disease Research at UCSF. She is both a neuroscientist and behavioral neurologist and is particularly interested in understanding neurodegenerative movement disorders. After undergraduate work at Stanford University, she received her medical and doctorate degrees in neuroscience at UC San Diego, where she studied cerebellar motor learning.

Swetha Mohan, PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow
Neurology

Swetha completed her Undergraduate and Masters in the University of Madras, India. She then worked as a junior research fellow in Dr. Sandhya Koushika's lab at the National Center for Biological Sciences, India, studying mitochondrial transport in neurons and its implications in neurodegenerative diseases. She then completed her Ph.D. at Dr. Michel Leroux's lab at Simon Fraser University where her research focused on understanding the molecular basis of maintaining ciliary structure throughout development, an important aspect in ciliopathies.

Malu Mandelli, PhD

Assistant Professional Researcher
Neurology

Maria Luisa Mandelli leads the neuroimaging research within the language team of the Memory and Aging Center. Her research focuses on neuroanatomical changes caused by language and other neurodegenerative disorders. She has been working on brain magnetic resonance imaging for the past ten years, with the goal of better understanding of how the brain develops, changes over time, and how it makes us who we are.

As a board-certified neurologist, Dr. Gardner evaluates and treats patients with various neurological disorders and provides them with follow-up care. As a fellowship-trained behavioral neurologist, Dr. Gardner has specific expertise in the evaluation and management of patients with neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia and mild cognitive impairment.

Maryana Alegro Ribeiro, PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow
Neurology

Dr. Alegro joined the Grinberg lab in 2015, where she uses her knowledge in image and signal processing for building computational tools to help improve the understanding of neurodegenerative diseases. She also works in building and testing prototype imaging equipment for the lab. Her major experience is in MRI and histological image processing and, more recently, polarized light imaging. Dr.
