Activities for Aging Neurogenesis (ActAN) Study

Participants who want to volunteer for research on healthy aging should first join the Healthy Aging Program.

Summary

  • Study Director: Kaitlin Casaletto, PhD
  • Sponsor: National Institutes of Health (NIH)
  • Official Study Title: Activities for Aging Neurogenesis
  • Conditions Studied: Healthy aging

Purpose of the Study

This is an intervention-based study looking at the relationship between lifestyle factors and protein markers of neural functioning.

Study Details

Inclusion Criteria: Volunteers between the ages 50–85 with minor or no memory problems who exercise less than 2hrs/week and are involved in the Healthy Aging study

Exclusion Criteria: Significant memory problems, diagnosis of a neurodegenerative disease, major psychiatric disorder or abuse of drugs/alcohol

What to Expect

Testing: Computer-based and tablet tests measuring attention and reaction time, paper and pencil cognitive testing, fasting blood draw, wearing FitBit, training program

  • Lumbar Puncture: Lumbar punctures are vital to our research efforts at the Memory and Aging Center. CSF collected through lumbar punctures is a primary source to measure markers from the brain in living humans. We now have reliable CSF markers for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease processes for use in the clinic, and many more markers in exploratory stages to help us better understand how the brain ages and how neurodegenerative disease unfolds in humans. If you are interested in participating in an optional lumbar puncture as part of our research study, please read the FAQ below:

Frequency of Visits: Two visits before and after the intervention, 6 weeks apart (1½ hours of testing and 1-hour condition orientation, questionnaires and blood draw)

Materials Needed Before Evaluation: None

Costs: No costs will be charged for any of the study procedures. Parking will be validated for the 1625 Owens Street Garage or 1630 Third Street Garage at the UCSF Mission Bay campus for all study visits. There is no monetary compensation for participation.
