Asian Cohort for Alzheimer’s Disease (ACAD) Research Study

Purpose of the Study

The Asian Cohort for Alzheimer’s Disease (ACAD) aims to address the underrepresentation of Asian American and Canadian populations in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research. The study will examine genetic and lifestyle factors to better understand how AD affects individuals of Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and other Asian ancestries. The ultimate goal is to enhance diagnostics, risk prediction, treatments, and healthcare delivery for these populations.

Study Details

Inclusion criteria:

  • 60 years old or older
  • Identify as Chinese, Chinese American, or Chinese Canadian
  • Reside in the United States or Canada
  • Can speak English, Mandarin, and/or Cantonese (study activities can be conducted in all three languages)

Exclusion criteria: Participants must meet eligibility criteria during pre-screening

What to Expect

Testing: Participants will undergo neurological and physical examinations, provide saliva or blood samples (optional), complete cognitive assessments, and answer questionnaires regarding lifestyle, demographics, and medical history. Additional testing may include imaging and/or a lumbar puncture. Participants may be asked to participate in affiliated studies.

The Frequency of Visits: Participation can be entirely virtual, requiring approximately 3–4 hours for interviews and assessments. Some participants may have follow-up appointments to track their health status.

Costs: No costs will be charged for study proceduresParking will be validated for participants visiting UCSF’s Mission Bay campus (1625 Owens Street Garage or 1630 Third Street Garage). Travel and hotel arrangements are the responsibility of the participant.
