Patient Care
The UCSF Edward and Pearl Fein Memory and Aging Center has a team of specialists from many fields, including brain and memory experts, nurses, social workers, and speech therapists, who work together to evaluate and care for patients with memory and thinking problems.

The UCSF Edward and Pearl Fein Memory and Aging Center (MAC), directed by Dr. Bruce Miller, is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including experts in neurology, neuropsychology, geriatrics, geropsychiatry, pharmacy, nursing, social work, and speech pathology. These specialists collaborate to provide comprehensive evaluations for patients experiencing memory and cognitive challenges.

Located on the UCSF Mission Bay campus in San Francisco, the UCSF Neurology Clinic and the Fein Memory and Aging Center Research Program are part of UCSF Health, a Magnet®-recognized hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Fein MAC clinic offers consultations to patients, families, and health care providers regarding diseases affecting memory and cognition. Visit the Make a Referral page for information on becoming a patient and what to expect during the initial evaluation.

Your contributions directly support the Fein Memory and Aging Center’s mission to deliver compassionate, high-quality clinical care for patients and their families.

Hours

The Fein Memory and Aging Center Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The clinic is closed on university holidays and does not provide primary care or after-hours coverage. Patients are encouraged to maintain a relationship with a primary care provider to coordinate comprehensive care and manage urgent health needs.

Medical Staff

Our attending physicians balance clinical care with research responsibilities, ensuring that patient care benefits from cutting-edge science. However, this limits clinic availability to designated days and times. Patients are encouraged to plan appointments well in advance and avoid cancellations to ensure timely care. Evaluations often include trainees who work under the supervision of Fein MAC faculty.

Scope of Care

The Fein Memory and Aging Center prescribes medications and treatments focusing on cognitive health. We do not manage other medical conditions and recommend patients work closely with their primary care provider to address overall health and wellness.

Communication

The best way to communicate with your provider is through MyChart, UCSF Health’s secure online portal. Each provider has a clinic coordinator who can assist with questions, appointments, forms, letters, and medical records. Patients should ensure they have their coordinator’s contact information. Please allow at least 48 hours for medication renewal requests and up to seven days for processing forms and letters.

Clinic Staff

Nursing

Nurses are available during regular business hours to assist with medication-related questions, changes in health conditions, referrals, and follow-up concerns.

Patient Care Coordinators

Patient care coordinators support providers by managing scheduling, medical records, and administrative needs.

Practice Manager

The practice manager oversees clinic operations, including staff and facility management. Patients may contact the practice manager with concerns about the clinic or staff.

Social Workers

Social workers are available during regular business hours to provide brief counseling, resource coordination, and clinical intervention.

Follow-up Appointments

While some patients visit the Fein MAC for a one-time evaluation or second opinion, others opt for ongoing follow-up care. Follow-up appointments are typically scheduled every 6 to 12 months, depending on clinical needs. This reflects the gradual progression of neurodegenerative conditions, which generally do not require frequent observation. If urgent concerns arise, patients are encouraged to contact the clinic for assistance.

Telemedicine Follow-up

Some providers at the Fein MAC offer telemedicine appointments, allowing patients to receive care remotely via computer. Telemedicine is particularly helpful for patients who live far from the clinic. Please inquire with your provider to see if telemedicine follow-up is available.

Records

Following your clinic appointment, a detailed letter summarizing the evaluation results and recommendations will be sent to your referring physician. Additional requests for medical records must be directed to the UCSF Medical Records Office, accompanied by a completed release of information form. For Spanish-speaking patients, the appropriate form is Autorización de divulgación de información médica.
