Summary
- Study Director: Adam Boxer, MD, PhD
- Sponsor: National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute on Aging (NIA)
- Official Study Title: Biomarker Evaluation in Young Onset Dementia From Diverse Populations (BEYONDD)
- Conditions Studied: Subjective complaints of cognitive, behavioral, or motor changes; mild cognitive or behavioral impairment; healthy aging; early onset dementias
Purpose of the Study
This study is being done to learn what early onset (age <65) impairment or dementia (EOD) looks like in Black, Latinx, Asian American, and other non-White participants. The study doctors also hope to learn whether low-cost methods like online questionnaires, app-based memory tests, and blood tests can be used to identify and diagnose adults with Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal lobar degeneration, or other types of EOD in different ethnic/racial groups.
Study Details
BEYONDD is run by a team of study doctors:
- Desiree Byrd, PhD (CUNY Queens)
- Monica Rivera-Mindt, PhD (Fordham University/Mount Sinai)
- Gil Rabinovici, MD (UCSF)
- Adam Boxer, MD, PhD (UCSF)
Inclusion Criteria:
- People between the ages of 40 and 64 with memory and thinking concerns
- Latinx/Hispanic, Black/African American, Asian/Asian American or Pacific Islander adults
What to Expect
Phase 1: Online and “at-home” visits include online questionnaires and tests of memory and thinking, at-home (or location of your choosing) blood draw, tablet-based tests of memory and thinking, and optional smartphone app assessments.
Phase 2: On-site visit includes a clinical evaluation and imaging of your brain.
Phase 3: Results disclosure visit, which can be done at a study site or via telemedicine (video conference) appointment. You may choose which results are given to you.
We encourage you to include a study partner (friend, family, or loved one) with you in any/all phases of BEYONDD, but it is not required.
Payment: You (and your study partner) will be paid for completing each BEYONDD visit. Participants will be paid the following amounts: $20 (for the online visit), $100 (for the “at-home” visit), $200 (for the on-site visit) and $100 for the results disclosure visit). If needed, BEYONDD can reimburse travel expenses of up to $1000 for the on-site visit. Study partners will be paid the following amounts: $20 (for the online visit), $50 (for the “at-home” visit).
