Kaancan Deniz, MD
Kaan grew up in Istanbul, Turkey, and finished medical school at Istanbul University. Following medical school, he pursued a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, where he focused on Alzheimer’s disease genetics, transcriptomics, and blood-based biomarkers with a focus on underrepresented minorities. He did his neurology residency at the University of Iowa, being one of the chief residents in his final year of training. As a resident, he led a dementia clinic at the Iowa City VA healthcare system and was inspired by clinical questions brought by his patients.
Kaan is primarily interested in autonomic nervous system physiology, the neurobiological basis of emotional regulation, and affective symptoms in individuals with frontotemporal lobar degeneration. To explore these research questions, he employs multimodal techniques including pathology, psychophysiology, and neuroimaging.
