Pedro Pinheiro-Chagas, PhD, studies the neural architecture and dynamics of human intelligence, focusing on symbolic cognitive systems, such as mathematics and language. His research program aims at understanding how these systems develop and decline and how we can help.
He combines machine learning, computational modeling, electrophysiological recordings (intracranial EEG, MEG), neuroimaging (fMRI), continuous behavioral measures (trajectory-tracking) and neuropsychology to study the processing stages and representational codes underlying cognitive operations. Complementarily, he uses intracranial electrical stimulation to modulate brain activity and behavior.
Previously, he did a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University in the Human Intracranial Cognitive Electrophysiology Program. He completed his PhD degree at the Sorbonne University/CEA-NeuroSpin in Paris, France. He did his undergraduate work in Psychology/Cognitive Science and a master's degree in Neuroscience at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
