Torie is a research associate in the Memory and Aging Center who manages the International NeuroHIV Cure Consortium imaging archive at UCSF. She is a recent graduate of the UCSF Masters of Science in Biomedical Imaging program, where she completed her thesis examining longitudinal changes in brain integrity during HIV using diffusion tensor imaging.

Joanna Hellmuth, MD, MHS

Assistant Professor

Dr. Joanna Hellmuth is a neurologist with sub-specialty training in cognitive and behavioral neurology. She practices at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center, where she evaluates and manages patients with mild cognitive impairment; neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body disease, frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia; and patients with HIV-related cognitive changes. Benedetta Milanini, PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Milanini received her PhD degree from the Catholic University of Rome. Prior to that, she graduated from La Sapienza University of Rome in July 2010 with a degree in Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychological Rehabilitation. Her PhD research focused on the identification of a cognitive screening test that is sensitive to the characteristics of neurocognitive impairment. Benedetta has published a manuscript on the usefulness of the MoCA screening test within the UCSF HIV Over 60 Cohort study in the Journal of AIDS.

Shireen Javandel

Senior Clinical Research Coordinator

Shireen coordinates the HIV research program at the Memory and Aging Center, including a number of domestic and international protocols focused on studying the impact of HIV infection on cognition. She also supports the Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health and faculty within the Global Brain Health Institute to facilitate research studies aiming to understand neurodegeneration and test strategies to reduce the global impact of dementia.

Victor Valcour, MD, PhD

Professor of Medicine

Dr. Valcour is a Professor of Medicine with a shared appointment in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and the Department of Neurology. His work crosses disciplines to research and care for cognitive disorders in aging populations and to understand brain injury in the setting of HIV among all ages, including funded pediatric HIV studies. His clinical work involves consultations for patients with cognitive disorders at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center.
